Taking meditation in stride
Area churches rediscover labyrinths as spiritual aids,
where patrons walk the paths and ponder life.
Sarah Elliott always had trouble meditating.
The psychic benefits of yoga also left her cold.
But the lawyer-turned-stay-
at-home-mother struck spiritual gold when she walked her first labyrinth.
“It really hooked me early on,” said Elliott, who chairs the Labyrinth Project at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Fort Washington.
Labyrinths are not mazes intended to confuse the walker, she says, but a single path that leads to the center and back out again.
The Rev. Marek P. Zabriskie, rector at St. Thomas, hopes to have an outdoor labyrinth at the church by spring. The Labyrinth Project, spearheaded by Elliott, has settled on a wooded area known as “the grove” that is adjacent to the church.
The project group is evaluating such logistical points as water run-off, tree placement, and materials. The proposal calls for a concrete labyrinth that is accessible every season of the year.
“Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has no dead ends; one can never become lost,” Zabriskie said. The labyrinth “is an unending path with twists and turns that helps us ponder the journey of life.”
The 190-year-old church, which sits on 42 acres and has more than 1,500 members, plans to construct an outdoor labyrinth as part of a plan to further utilize its spacious campus for spiritual development. Construction of the labyrinth will cost upward of $60,000.
“In today’s world, it’s hard to be here, to be present. We’re always three steps ahead,” Elliott said. The labyrinth “does a great job discharging that psychic energy.”
A self-described “left-brain person,” Elliott said her logical side was invaluable in her work as a lawyer. But as she grew older, she wanted that left brain to quiet down. She first experienced true quiet when she walked a labyrinth at St. Thomas church.
About eight years ago, Elliott and her then-5-year-old son, Will, walked a giant labyrinth made of canvas. Today, that same brightly colored canvas covers the floor of MacColl Auditorium, the parish hall at St. Thomas.
A replica of the stone labyrinth at historic Chartres Cathedral in France, the purple-and-white tarp was commissioned by the church and hand-painted with the ornate Chartres design.
“We came and we walked it . . . and it was very appealing,” Sarah Elliott said. “Most people do feel something after they walk [a labyrinth]; they see images, or hear a voice, or get a flash of insight.”
Acquiring insight or spiritual growth through use of a prayer labyrinth, or meditation labyrinth, has occurred for thousands of years.
It is believed that the first labyrinth was in Greek mythology. Labyrinths also were used as spiritual aids in ancient Egypt, Peru and India.
During the Middle Ages, labyrinths were adopted by early Christians and indicated on the floors of cathedrals across Europe. Patrons were encouraged to walk in prayer and to contemplate the single path as a symbol of salvation.
Labyrinths fell out of favor in the 18th century because of a movement away from pagan-like symbols. Many labyrinths were removed or covered up in the ancient cathedrals. But recently, a renewed interest in spirituality brought back the labyrinth.
Made popular by a Christian movement in England - and also by Grace Cathedral, an influential church in San Francisco - the labyrinth is being embraced by denominations around the world as a viable part of the spiritual journey.
“It’s a tool to help people connect with God,” Zabriskie said. “A school of thought believes that as we walk, we do our best thinking; movement facilitates spiritual fulfillment.”
With thousands of indoor and outdoor labyrinths built throughout the United States, more focus is being placed on how the device can enhance spiritual development.
Several organizations have adopted the labyrinth as a form of spiritual development. St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in nearby Blue Bell built an outdoor labyrinth made of grass and bricks. St. Asaph’s in Bala Cynwyd has a bricks-and-stone labyrinth.
St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, Bryn Mawr College, and the Health & Wellness Center in Doylestown also have built labyrinths.
“There’s no dogma attached to the labyrinth – it’s all about prayer,” Elliott said. “Prayer means having a relationship with God, saying, ‘I want to be here with God.’ ”

Circle Of Prosperity Meditation
I invite you to participate in spirit with others from across the planet in the Circle of Prosperity meditation each morning at 8am Pacific Time/9a MT/10a CT/11a ET
This meditation will only take 5 minutes of your time and you can do it anywhere!
The Circle of Prosperity Meditation is a visualization of prosperity on earth. It is an opportunity to open our mind’s eye to see humanity moving upward in its evolution, with peace, prosperity, along with unconditional love and understanding between nations, races, communities, religions and individuals being the result.
Done daily, this meditation is very effective in increasing the prosperity in our own hearts and then spreading those vibrations of prosperity and love outward to the farthest reaches of the Cosmos.
Prosperity will never be attained by keeping our minds focused on the lack around us, nor can we reach love by following the pathway of greed and evny. Like attracts like. When we send forth prosperous thoughts, wishing abundance for all around us, prosperity returns to us.
Whatever our minds, intent and focus is directed to, we attract back to us. This is one of the ways we create our own realities, and it is one of the ways that together we create our world.
By choosing to focus our attention on peace and prosperity across our planet, we draw peace and prosperity to us and as we join together, one by one focusing upon the good we would wish for this world, our vibration grows stronger and stronger until it resonates outward to blanket the entire world. And that which we have thought in our minds and felt in our hearts becomes a planetary reality.
Daily we hear reports that make it seem humanity is spiraling downward toward self-destruction. Reports of war and crime, a world economy downwardly spiraling out of control, hunger and atrocities come at us from a thousand different sources.
We can either choose to feel weighted down by these forecasts of gloom and doom or we can recognize them as a call for us to return to blessing. We can see them as a time for each and everyone of us to offer unconditional love and support to one another and to our world. The Circle of Prosperity meditation is an effective way of doing that.
Best practiced sitting with eyes closed, the Circle of Prosperity meditation may be prefaced by a moment of silent prayer or by mentally drawing light to fill and surround you. This is your choice.
Some of us our more visual than others. That is, we are able to clearly “see things” with our mind’s eye, while others are more inclined to simply think, the focus of their imagining formed by words and thoughts rather than by images. Either way is perfect.
This meditation may be practiced any time and any where. Sitting down is not mandatory. nor is listening to the guided Circle of Blessing Meditation you will find here. To step into the Circle, all you need do is bring to mind the ideal whenever you can, letting it sink into your heart and radiate outward as your own attitude of love and peace and goodwill for all.
Please join us.
=========
The words to the meditation:
Take a deep breath now, and as you feel the air entering and filling your lungs, imagine that it is the shimmering white light of blessing. Mentally affirm, “I am so blessed.” Hold the breath in your lungs for as long as you can, and as it releases, imagine this light spreading foward to touch and bless others. Mentally affirm, “I am a blessing.”
Now imagine that you are stepping forward to join a growing circle of like-minded others who have gathered for the purpose of blessing our planet and all it’s inhabitants. Imagine now that you feel each of your hands being gently clasped by the person standing on either side of you. As you join hands with those around you, realize that the circle is becoming an unbroken ring of blessing surrounding the entire world.
As you stand in this ring of blessing and look inside the circle, you see the entire planet there before you. imagine that a little golden bits of light, like snowflakes, are now gently falling to earth to softly blanket the entire planet and all it inhabitants in peace, prosperity and love.
Imagine people everywhere looking up to see these bits of light falling upon them. People the world over are smiling, laughing and joyous as these tiny bits of light float gently down from the heavens. Watch as some catch flakes of light in their hands and gleefully laugh, eager to share this light with those around them. Watch others grow blissfully quiet and reverent as the light falls upon them.
This is a magical moment as you watch this light of prosperity blanket the world. Feel the peace, love and healing it brings, as all over the world people begin to extend mutual love and affinity to one another. People of every society, of every race, of every religion, all reaching out to one another in genuine love and respect.
This is the beginning of peace and prosperity on earth.
Prosperity has come. Peace has come. Love has come. Joy has come. Feel it in your heart now. Breathe it in. Breathe it out.
Now gently let go of the hands holding yours. The Circle of Prosperity has been established. It is done. All is well. And so it is.

Tangled Up In Blue and You
Tangled up in you.
Couples at a recent Yoga Date Night channeled their inner child with the “airplane†position. John Endris, 38, foreground, lifting Laurie Reade, 32, has been curious about yoga and will likely return, “especially if massage is involved.â€
Yoga date nights offer couples a refreshing twist on dinner and a movie.
Sure, you could see a movie or enjoy a mojito at a rooftop hot spot. You could catch a free concert or stroll along one of our lovely lakes.
Or you could do what Cheryl and Jerry Rogers of New Richmond, Wis., did on a date a few Fridays back, after entrusting their two young daughters to Grandma.
They locked arms back-to-back to feel one another’s breathing. They bent and twisted, curled into balls and crawled on top of one another. They played an adult version of airplane.
But, Grandma, it’s OK. Really. They were attending Yoga Date Night at the Yoga Center of Minneapolis and we have video to prove it.
The two-hour couples workshop is one of several offered throughout the year at the center’s two Minneapolis locations. Yoga instructor Tanya Boigenzahn Sowards created the concept as a way to get longtime marrieds out of their ruts, as well as to offer a fun and fresh alternative for daters, parents and children, or yoga buddies.
“The biggest question people ask me is, ‘Do we have to have yoga experience?’” said Sowards, 35. “It is absolutely not necessary to have any experience.”
You don’t even need a yoga mat, as they’ll provide one. What you do need is an open mind and an agreement that no matter what happens, you and your significant other will still drive home together.
“Communication is a huge factor,” said Sowards, who is married and has a 21-month-old son. “People may argue. Sometimes, one of the couple can’t bend forward. Or the husband is tall and the wife is short. Or she’s flexible, he’s not. So you have to alter the practice a little bit and find balance. You learn a lot about yourself, each other and how to build intimacy.”
Staying connected and building intimacy was precisely the goal for Michael and Julie Fink of Plymouth. Married for four years, with three young adult children between them, the Finks saw in yoga date night an opportunity to deepen their relationship.
Both previously divorced, they say they’re more conscious than ever about the work necessary to keep a relationship healthy. “We really make the effort to stay connected,” said Julie, 52, a freelance writer and homemaker who has done yoga for 10 years.
“Couples yoga is something we’d like to continue to pursue,” added Michael, 53, father of a 17-year-old girl. “Of course, my 200-plus pounds to [Julie's] 102 means I might have to stick to my diet if we’re going to keep doing this.”
One of the evening’s highlights was watching Julie attempt to lift her husband above her head, airplane-style. Didn’t happen. Didn’t matter. “We were just giggles,” Julie said. “We did it for giggles.”
Most of the 16 largely lean and youthful couples participating would agree. While there was an occasional “You’re going to drop me!” or “You’re doing it wrong!” the reigning reaction of the evening was lighthearted laughter. At one point, Sowards lifted her yoga partner above her head with her legs and quipped, “This is something you can do at the gas station.”
Julie Stoltman, 28, who is in a yoga teacher training program, arrived with goodnatured boyfriend Jon Kubes, 27, both of Howard Lake, Minn. “I dragged him here,” she said. “I owe him dinner.”
Laurie Reade, 32, a Minneapolis musician, brought fiancé John Endris, 38, who has been curious about her yoga passion. “It was fun,” said Endris, who works at a bank. “I liked it.” He’ll probably come back, he said, “especially if massage is involved.”
But the award for bravery, hands-down, goes to Erica Rivera, 27, and Brett Hoerner, 37. Rivera, a writer from Rosemount, and Hoerner, a St. Louis Park technology consultant, were on a blind date. The two were fixed up by Sowards, who teaches them both and knew the two divorcees with young children were ready to start dating again.
But here? Wouldn’t a coffee date be less awkward?
“So far, so good,” said Hoerner after about an hour of mat work with the lithe and lovely Rivera. “I’m open.”
A few days later, Rivera assessed her unusual first date. “Honestly, the most awkward part was sitting face-to-face and having to maintain that eye contact,” she said. Overall, though, she felt “pretty comfortable,” adding that it didn’t hurt that Hoerner “was very attractive. I was happy with the results.” Those results included a second date, which was off-limits to the media.
The class has that happy effect on many people, Sowards said. “It’s great for couples to see each other from a different point of view,” she said. “They really go for it. Then they go out to dinner and have fun. It really sparks things for them.”
The Rogerses of Wisconsin, married for nine years, were happy they attended. Cheryl, a yoga and wellness instructor, got to share her passion with her husband. Jerry got a chance to step outside his comfort zone. “I need to stretch more in general,” said Jerry, who works as a marketing manager for Woodbury-based Llewellyn Publishing. “There’s a lot of benefit after doing it for a while.”
In the meantime, they were planning to soak up the good feeling attained by their joint foray into the “asanas,” or yoga body positions. But meditation can only captivate most of us for so long. After two hours, the Rogerses were ready to hit the town.
“Grandma,” Cheryl said with a grin, “told us we could stay out.”

10 Mind Tricks to Quit Smoking Now
10 Mind Tricks to Quit Smoking
By Valerie Dawson, Certified Hypnotherapist
Creator of Stop Smoking Fast And Easy Program
Have you decided to stop smoking? It doesn’t have to be hard! One of the keys for breaking the habit once and for all is to tap into the power of your mind. Here are some tips to help you succeed.
1. Make quitting smoking your number one goal. Rather than having a long list of different goals, make quitting smoking your number-one top priority. By focusing on quitting smoking as your most important goal, you increase your chances of success.
2. Keep the end result in mind. Focus on how much better your life will be as a non-smoker. Think about how you’ll be able to breathe better and your energy level will increase. Imagine all the things you can do with the money you’ll save each year by not purchasing cigarettes. And most importantly, focus on how you’ll add many, many healthy years to your life, so you can do all the things you’ve wanted to do, spending time with people you care about. Make a long list of all the positive benefits of being a non-smoker!
3. Make it easier on yourself. Think of ways that you can make quitting easier for yourself. Can you quit with a friend or family member? Could you ask a co-worker to go for a quick walk with you on breaks and avoid the smoking area? Could you take a smoking cessation class? Could you learn self-hypnosis? Could you stock up on fruit, veggies, or sugar free gum?
4. Make a commitment to yourself. Plan the date and time that you will smoke your last cigarette. Make this promise to yourself as if your life depends on it. Why? Because it does! Write down the “sneaky tricks” that could try to lure you in for “just one” smoke (you know, the things that have triggered you in the past). Write down your strategy for outsmarting these sneaky triggers.
5. Put your plan in writing. Write down everything you’ve thought of while reading this article, plus any other ideas that you believe will help you to remain smoke free. More ideas: stay away from other smokers for a while; get rid of your cigarettes and ashtrays; ask a friend to call you every day for moral support.
6. Flip off negative thoughts like a switch. Instead of thinking, “This is hard” change it to “Its getting easier and easier”. You could even come up with your own mantra. My favorites: “I take care of health.”; “I can handle this.”; “I can do it!” Have a positive statement you can say to yourself throughout the day to keep you on track.
7. Give yourself rewards. Why not have a quit jar and put all the money that you would have spent on cigarettes in it? You could save up for a tropical vacation or a down payment on that new sports car. Think of a nice reward to give yourself for being smoke free for one day, one week, one month, and so on! Mark them on your calendar so you have something to look forward to.
8. Approach quitting with a “I can. I will. I must.” attitude. If your child or loved one was burning in a building and you were the only one there to get them out, would you just “give it a try?” Would you simply “give it a shot?” Or would you “give it everything you’ve got?” Of course you would do anything and everything, whatever it took. Well, aren’t you worth the same? So approach quitting smoking with the same attitude, because you’re truly saving your own life - you’re worth it!
9. Visualize your way to success. Every morning and evening, close your eyes for a few moments and rehearse in your mind how you will say “no” to any temptations to having a cigarette, and notice how good it feels to be in control of your triggers and urges. Also, picture and imagine yourself as a happy non-smoker for 3 to 5 minutes each day. See yourself as happy, healthy and active doing all the things you love to do.
10. Learn to Manage Stress. Stress is everywhere, and while we think that cigarettes help us to relax, in reality, nicotine is a stimulant to the body. During the first few days of quitting, you will likely have thoughts to have a cigarette when you feel stressed. Learning to take long, deep breaths throughout the day can be a good start. If you can learn to tackle stress, you can tackle kicking the habit much more easily.
Good Luck!

Best Way To Overcome Disappointments
Here is a great article by Joe Vitale of The Secret
fame.
He talks of how to overcome disappointment and what
it takes.
We all have at some point wanted or desired something
or someone in a strong way, however we only increase our
disappointment level by focusing on what we did not get.
Joe talks about the best way to overcome your desires
and disappointments. It certainly is not easy and we
need to practice taking the high road.
Trust and let go, let God.

How to Handle Disappointment
By Dr. Joe Vitale
How do you handle setbacks?
How do you handle disappointments?
How do you handle being stuck?
Let me answer with a story…
As you probably know by now, I own Francine, a rare 2005 Panoz Esperante GTLM exotic sports car, as well as rock star Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith)’s even rarer 1998 Panoz AIV Roadster.
Obviously, I’m a fan of Panoz cars.
I’ve been to the Panoz factory, met part of the family, attended their racing school, and love everything by and about Panoz.
So you can imagine how excited I got when I heard that someone took a Panoz Esperante and turned it into a flying car.
Yes, a flying car.
When I checked, I found the story to be true. It was not only transformed into a car that could fly by Jesse James and his nine-man team, but it actually flew - and was broadcast on television.
The 2004 Panoz Esperante took flight on an episode of Monster Garage, making it off the ground for 280 feet before touching down safely.
I wanted that car.
Yes, I wanted that car.
But when I checked, I learned the person who owned the flying car didn’t want to sell it. He just kept it in storage.
I thought that was pretty sad, but I let it go and forgot about it.
Until a few days ago, that is.
That’s when I learned that the Panoz flying car sold at auction for only $45,000.
Not only was that a ridiculously low amount of money — as the car alone is worth $105,000 and as a flying car it’s worth three times that (at least) — but the auction happened last January.
Six months ago!
I am rarely upset by things these days, but I have to confess learning the flying car sold for only $45,000 and six months ago almost caused me to blow a gasket.
How could I have missed the auction?
Why didn’t anyone tell me?
Talk about disappointment.
I contacted the Panoz folks and shared my frustration. They told me they tried to buy the car at that auction by somehow couldn’t get their bid high enough in time. They lost the car.
This seemed bizarre.
I’m obviously a collector of rare Panoz cars. The flying car would be a gem for me to own. It would be pure P.T. Barnum, who of course I wrote a book about.
But somehow I was out of tune, or not clear, or something.
Not only did I not get a chance to bid on the car, but the auction happened half a year ago.
What the - ?
But things got even more interesting and even more disappointing.
When I tired to find out the name of the person who actually won the car, so I could ask him if he’d sell it to me at a higher price, I hit dead ends.
I couldn’t find him, and the auction house wouldn’t give me his name for privacy reasons.
All of this caused me to be upset for three days.
Three days.
I’m not proud of it. But I’m trying to share a story here, as well as vent a little. This was an experience of deep disappointment to me. I took it personally, and judged myself harshly.
I felt stuck, unhappy, and un-clear.
So, what did I do?
As it turned out, I had to go back into the recording studio to record a few more segments to my forthcoming new audio program, The Awakening Course.
This is the most advanced material I’ve ever created. It covers the four stages of awakening and leads you through the first three stages, so you can experience them live. The fourth stage comes by grace, but can be described. I do it in the program.
As I recorded my new material about trust and letting go, I realized that I had been very attached to wanting that flying car.
VERY attached.
Yet a key secret to attracting whatever you want is to let go of attachment. Want it without needing it. As my friend Bootzie often says, “I’m perfectly satisfied, I just want more!â€
“I’m perfectly satisfied, I just want more!†- Bootzie
That’s the spirit of detachment that attracts results.
I wasn’t detached.
And I wasn’t trusting.
My ego felt things should be different from reality.
My ego felt the car was right for me.
My ego was upset when the car flew away from me.
But the Universe (Divine, God, Gaea, Collective Unconscious, etc) sees the bigger picture. It knows more than your ego. You have to trust IT.
There may be several reasons for me not attracting that car, including -
* Where do you park a car with wings?
* Where do you fly a flying car?
* How do you fly a flying car?
And there’s the very real possibility that the person who won the flying car has better reasons for owning it than me.
In short, the way I handled this disappointment was by letting go, trusting, and moving on.
It’s very possible the flying car will appear in my life at some later point, but I no longer need it to appear.
I’m happy with or without it.
That’s where you want to be with everything in your life: at peace.
And that’s the secret to attracting what you want and surviving setbacks, disappointments and stuck issues:
You trust it’s all working out for your highest good, you do whatever is next for you to do in the moment, and you do it all from a place of serenity.
You move on - smiling, trusting, letting go.
You soar through life — with no need for a flying car.

Attracting Abundance
Each day I ponder the thought, what should I blog about today?
I let the spirit move me and see what comes up! What would be in the highest interest for the readers today?
This week I seem to be on a manifestation, prosperity roll. Today is Dr Carol Look’s EFT Attracting Abundance book. The book is very good. If you get the downloaded e-book version, you can also pick up an audio of the EFT tapping sequences. I recommend both the audio and written e-book.
Dr Look talks about manifesting what you focus on. She discusses 5 ways to bring focus to the forefront. Then takes you on a tapping sequence to release any emotional blockages related to abundance.

Focus on What You Want…
Most of us do know what we want, that’s not the problem. But when we tell someone our “story” we can’t help but focus on the negative situation we’re trying to change! So instead of telling your friend, “I want a beautiful new home on a lake” you say “I can’t stand this tiny home in this filthy city, and I need a new house on the lake right now…” Instead of telling your coach, “I want to double my income this year” you say “I’m sick and tired of scraping by and just making ends meet. It ’s about time I have more money!” Can you feel the difference in energy between the statements?
What we tend to focus on is what we already have that we don’t want any more. We are exceptionally clear that we don’t want the lousy boss, or the pile of bills, but instead of focusing on what having a new boss or being self-employed with a healthy income would feel like, we keep talking about the old stuff we want to get rid of from our lives.
There are several ways to be more conscious about focusing on what you want instead of what you don’t want. They include:
(1) giving your undivided attention to what you want
(2) boosting your gratitude lists
(3) focusing on anything that makes you feel better
(4) assuming and expecting what you want will happen
(5) using EFT for your resistant thoughts and feelings
Are you using one or all of these tools? If not, it’s time to ramp up your program! Pick something out of this list and get inspired to use it with joy every day. Maybe you stalled your habit of writing your appreciation lists, maybe you’re not doing EFT for your resistance, maybe you don’t expect to get what you want. Start putting these vibration-changing tools into your day, and watch how things change.
1. EFT SETUP PHRASES:
The EFT SETUP Phrases for this topic are as follows:
While tapping the karate chop spot on either hand, repeat these phrases out loud, (or change the words to fit your exact situation).
“Even though I can’t seem to focus on what I want without resenting what I have, I choose to accept who I am and how I feel.”
“Even though I don’t know how to give my attention to what I want, I always contaminate it, I accept who I am and how I feel right now.”
“Even though I it’s hard to focus on what I want, I’m willing to imagine that what I want is already here.”
I have indicated where to tap while saying each of the phrases below. You may repeat the positive round more than once if you wish. (Those of you who are new to EFT may view a chart of the spots on my web site under the EFT pages.)
